Summary (175 - 225 words max)

LivTours’ Paris Catacombs Tour is a semi-private tour taking you beneath the dazzling lights of modern Paris to the devilishly dark catacombs. Occasionally called the “Empire of Death,” this stunningly macabre 200-mile maze houses the painstakingly arranged remains of roughly 6 million Parisians. On this tour, with no more than six other travelers, you will get to see all the ghoulish sites without waiting for hours in line and in the company of an expert guide. You will enjoy the added bonus of LivTours VIP access to rarely seen restricted chambers.

In the late 1700s, the 200-mile long tunnels that were originally built to connect the city’s ancient stone quarries were put to the current use to house the overflowing cemeteries. After the collapse of a prominent hillside cemetery wall, the city embraced the nightly work to move graves from cemeteries around the city to the solid underground passages. In the early 1800s the tunnels were said to have hosted events such as concerts and cocktail parties. But the tunnels were soon forgotten about as other major international events eclipsed the public’s interest until they opened to the public in 1874. This underground cemetery, officially known as the Catacombs of Paris, only occupies a small portion of the enormous subterranean city that Paris hosts.
